Technology that Augments Learning

You ask, Evolve answers! Evolve’s Chief Solution Strategist, Alex Ryan, and Lead Instructional Designer, Tristia Hennessey answer your learning and education technology questions.

How can instructors and trainers best use technology without negatively impacting learner interaction & engagement?

The most important thing to remember is that technology is just a tool that should be used to augment the learning experience and should never replace engagement points or interaction between instructor and learner.

It’s also important to choose the tools and technology which are right for your audience and objectives. There are many tools available, but it’s important to use the right ones. Many may fall short for your goal and not be appropriate for your audience by either being too technical, or not technical enough.

One example of a great tool we would recommend that fosters engagement and interaction with learners is Mural. This is a great tool, used for Mind mapping, fosters collaboration, creates an environment for brainstorming, and allows ideas and concepts to be gathered from multiple participants.

Tools which allow for polling, quizzing, or using QR codes on mobile devices are also useful for creating engaging experiences.

Many common platforms like Box, Dropbox, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, WebEx, have these features and functionality built in. Many of these also have online whiteboarding and annotation tools so participants can whiteboard together, even in remote situations.
